Publisher's Synopsis
The V2 'Green Arrow' class of the LNER has been called 'the engine that won the war'. There are other contendersfor the title but the prodigious work performed by the Green Arrows certainly gives them a valid claim. Intended to combat road competition and built to work fast-fitted freight, they proved equally useful on fast passenger trains. They were the second of Gresley's 'second-generation' locomotives and, but for the war, might well have helped bring about a rail revival in the 1940's. As it was, later tests showed that despite many criticisms they were among the most efficient steam locomotives ever built for the work on which they were engaged.
