The book gives a good account of Fort St George built in 1653 from different ages. IT was not the first fortress built by the Europeans in India as generally thought it was Fort Emmanuel or Fort Cochin built in 1503 by the Portuguese. The foreword is by H.E. Sir Arthur Hope who was the Governor of Madras, not Chennai in 1945. The author D.M. Reid was the founder of the Fort St George Museum. (Past-India.com)
