The Rubaiyat of a Golfer By J.A.Hammerton & D.L. Ghilchik

Extract from the Foreword

Most of these rhymes were written in the years between the Wars. A Literary friend with many volumes of poetry to his credit, who had never handled a golf club, thought they somehow caught the melancholy of Omar and left him with a feeling of sadness for those who pursued a sport that had never attracted him. He was a poet, but no golfer, whereas the writer was the reverse. For certain of the verses my poet friend expressed particular fancy , though quite unable to follow the terms of the game, and his selection of some nine or ten I sent to the editor of a London magazine, where they were duly printed, together with some decorative drawings by a well-known draughtsman. The magazine in question ceased publication not long thereafter, which left me with a slight feeling of guilt. And then a quaint thing happened……..
