Publisher's Synopsis
Sir Hugh Walpole, in a letter to 'The Times Literary Supplement' in 1931 said of Mr Collingwoods book; 'A friend of mine has described it as "the finest guidebook in English"; but it is, of course far more than a guidebook, for it contains the grandest prose writing about the Lake District in existence. The author thoroughly revised the work for the reissue of it in 1934 by Messrs. Warne, and it is in this text which constitutes Part I, containing the descriptive account of the scenery and the story of the Lake District. Part II comprises a very full gazetteer, and a short note on transport in the lake counties.
