Publisher’s Synopsis

The Southern Railway began life badly. Formed by the amalgamation of three run-down companies it soon became the frequent object of abuse and the subject of many cruel jokes. In the short span of 16 years, an energetic team of men under an inspired General Manager, transformed the Southern into what was, in many ways, the best most progressive British railway. The author came to live on the Southern 34 years ago and in this book, he has produced, mostly from his own photographs, a fascinating pictorial record. The Southern was so very much more than then just a railway and, although steam locomotives feature in most of the pictures, electric trains, docks, ships and other activities have been recorded so that the book is informative as well as nostalgic.
