….It is not known when the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa wrote his celebrated play Sakuntala, Scholarly opinion associates him with the reign of the Gupta emperor Chandra Gupta II (AD 376-415), but the history of the work goes back further, to a story in the Mahabharata, and before that to the mysterious sources of the Indian imagination….
