Rosa Nouchette Carey was born in 1840 in Stratford-le-Bow, London. Robert Ord’s Atonement was published in 1884 - in fact between 1868 and her death in 1909, she produced forty-one novels. One of her close friends was another prolific writer Mrs. Henry Wood and she also knew the poet Mathilde Blind. Her novels reflect the values of her time and were seen as good fiction for girls.
