Publisher's Synopsis
The Musee d'Orsay is a multidiscipline museum, devoted to art from the second half of the 19th century, and is housed in the historic premises of the former Gare d'Orsay, Paris, built for the great exhibition of 1900. The changing light effects and crowds of visitors at that time meant that it was only possible to display sculpture beneath the magnificent metal dome designed by the former station's architect, Victor Laloux. It was here that sculpture, which had stayed hidden in museum cellars for years, was first put on public display, creating considerable interest when the Museum opened in December 1986. Since then, major purchases have enabled the Museum to expand its collections, turning it into one of Europe's most comprehensive groupings of late 19th-century sculpture. This stunning book brings together 150 of the most beautiful works, grouped according to movement: Romanticism Neoclassicism, Eclecticism, Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Primitivism. For the first time the sculptures are presented in their wider context - appearing alongside contemporary paintings and architecture and restoring the atmosphere of this magnificent setting.
