Made in China The Story of China's Expression By Cornelia Spencer

Publishers Synopsis

Much that is cultural has been turned to commercial usage in our day, but the title of this book (which is by the author of 'Three Sisters') gives us a reverse happy reversal of that process. The phrase "Made in China" would probably suggest to many people the trade-mark stamped on commercial goods of Chinese manufacture, yet importers and trading firms would find little in their line here.   The "goods"  about which this book has been written need no trade-mark because their eternal beauty of craftsmanship is impressed indelibly upon them.  Pottery and silk and jade -these were the materials of intensely individualistic artists whose work (or what little it remains) is beyond price, and the pattern for countless imitators of the East and West.  The products described are not only those of men's hands, but of their minds and spirits also.  Music, poetry, the drama, medicine, ideals of humanity - these and other varied expressions of man's higher nature are dealt with in separate chapters which are blended into the broader picture that shows so vividly what a tremendous contribution China has made to world culture in all its parts.
