This volume is the first of the series providing a comprehensive selection of English verse from the 13th to the 20th centuries, and intended for general readers as well as students, and for young as well as old. The choice is not confined to lyrics, and many longer poems are given in their entirety. This volume, which covers the 250 years from the early lyrics to Shakespeare, includes 'Chaucer's Prologue' and two of the 'Canterbury Tales', generous selections from Spencers 'Faerie Queene' and from Shakespeare's plays, and many lyrics from the Elizabethan song books.
