Description

Ward, Lock, Bowden & Co.; 1892. Translated from the Spanish by Michael de Cervantes Saavedra by Charles Jarvis Esq. With coloured pictures and nearly 700 engravings on wood by Tony Johannot. Bound in the original publisher's striking red cloth boards, heavily stamped with ornate black and gold-gilt decorative illustrations and titles to the front cover and spine. Spine is a little dulled and wear evident to top and bottom of spine. Corners bumped and rubbed. Binding is solid and square. Internal pages are clean with light, uniform age-toning to the text block margins. No previous owner marks. Note on Edition: The title page states "With Coloured Pictures," but this copy is the standard trade variant issued by the publisher without the colour plates, featuring the complete run of text and nearly 700 black-and-white Johannot wood engravings. A lovely, highly decorative Victorian collector's copy. Preowned. No ISBN.
