Rosa Nouchette Carey was born in 1840 in Stratford-le-Bow, London. Barbara Heathcote’s Trial was published in 1898 - in fact between 1868 and her death in 1909, she produced forty-one novels. One of her close friends was another prolific writer Mrs. Henry Wood and she also knew the poet Mathilde Blind. Her novels reflect the values of her time and were seen as good fiction for girls. Other novels by Carey include; Wee Wilfie, Wooed and Married, Not Like Other Girls, Aunt Diana to name but a few.
