Publisher’s Synopsis
Sir Harold Wilson's book ‘A Prime Minister on Prime Ministers’ takes the careers and achievements of 12 Prime Minister's and examines them from a fresh standpoint. Traditional biographies are written with the historian’s advantage of hindsight, in that each Prime Ministerial action can be judged by its consequences. But Sir Harold’s fascinating studies are based on different criteria. Only one who has for many years held the office himself can estimate the pressures, the conflicting considerations, whether a policy, political, electoral or international repercussions, which bear on a Prime Minister. Sir Harold puts himself in the place of the other 12 Prime Ministers and in each case estimates the precise factors which governed the decision-making process. The judgements in the book consequently provide new and challenging evaluations and some surprising, reassessments. The careers of the 12 Prime Ministers are placed in their historical context by intermediate chapters briefly surveying the developments under the other holders of the office from Walpole to modern times…..
